The museum is divided into three permanent exhibition parts and features approximately 10,000 significant objects related to the events of 9/11:

The Historical Exposition is split into September 11, the days leading up to 9/11, and the years after. Everything that happened on 9/11 is detailed, from the initial hijacking through the destruction of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon to the heroic actions of Flight 93.

The "National September 11 Memorial" is a memorial to the almost 3,000 victims of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001, and the six victims of the bombing of the World Trade Center in February 1993.

The reflecting pools of the memorial are nearly an acre in area. They feature the largest artificial waterfalls in North America. The pools were built right into the holes where the original Twin Towers were.

The names of those lost in the terrorist attacks of 2001 and 1993 are written on bronze panels that line the edges of the memorial pools.
